Filing a trademark in Iran from abroad
A practical guide for companies and individuals outside Iran who want to protect a trademark, patent or design there.
Why a separate filing in Iran
Intellectual property rights stop at the border. A trademark registered in Europe, North America or elsewhere in Asia does not, on its own, give you rights in Iran. If your products reach the Iranian market through distributors, online sellers or licensees, a local registration is what lets you stop copies and unauthorised use.
It also protects you against the most common problem foreign brand owners face: someone else registering the brand first. Recovering a mark from a prior filer is slower and costlier than filing at the outset.
How the process works for you
1. Check and plan
Start with the instant check to confirm the classes and spot wording issues. Then order a comprehensive search so you know whether earlier marks stand in the way.
2. Agree the budget
Use the calculator for a live estimate, then request a written quote. The quote lists every fee and any documents we need from you.
3. Documents and translation
Applicants outside Iran normally act through a local representative, which usually means signing a power of attorney. We tell you exactly which documents are needed for your case and whether they must be legalised. We translate the goods and services, specifications and descriptions into Persian.
4. Filing and examination
We file the application and monitor it through examination and publication. If the examiner raises an objection or a third party opposes, we explain the issue in plain English and recommend a response.
5. Registration and beyond
Once registered, we record the details for renewal reminders and can help with licences, assignments and enforcement when you need them.
Tips from our practice
- File in every class you actually use or plan to use soon, not only your core product.
- Consider a Persian-script version of your brand if you will market it in Persian.
- Keep evidence of your use and reputation; it helps if a dispute ever arises.
- Do not wait for a distributor to file on your behalf; file in your own name.
